Research and Theories

The academic environment in schools has become increasingly competitive and stressful. The proper type and amount of exercise can help counteract the feelings of pressure experienced by students. Healthy, happy students do better in school, stay out of trouble and enjoy active lives.

The Sound Body Sound Mind curriculum is designed to increase the overall fitness levels of youth with a variety of social fitness activities. The goal is for students to have so much fun participating in the fitness games and exercises that they will not think of it as a workout as much as an enjoyable activity. We call this “sneaky fitness” - when activities that increase cardiorespiratory endurance feel like games rather than exercise.

In the Sound Body Sound Mind curriculum you will find exercises which increase stability, strength, balance, flexibility, locomotion, coordination, agility and manipulative skills. These are important areas of focus for the development of students who are skilled and competent movers.

All of the Sound Body Sound Mind activities and templates are designed to allow students to explore their own abilities without the threat of being embarrassed in front of their peers. Each activity unit leaves ample opportunities for teachers to praise the students on a number of levels. It also is designed so students can encourage and support each other. Creating a community that promotes competency and effort rather than outcome, will enhance the self-esteem of students and increase their desire to participate.
